Storing a collector car properly

Climate, security and the questions to ask a storage facility.

Classic cars in a private garage

A collector car spends far more of its life standing still than moving. How and where it stands has a great deal to do with how well it survives. Good storage is not glamorous, but it is one of the most important decisions an owner makes.

Climate before everything

Damp is the quiet enemy. Humidity encourages corrosion, mould in interiors and deterioration of rubber and leather. Specialist storage facilities typically control humidity, and some control temperature too. Ask how the environment is managed and monitored, and whether you can see the readings.

Security

Ask about the physical security of the building, alarm systems, monitoring and access control. A discreet location helps; a facility that does not advertise what it holds is often a better one. Find out who can access the cars and under what circumstances.

Insurance

Confirm how your car will be insured while in storage, whether by your own policy, the facility's or both, and make sure the terms are clear. Insurers may have specific requirements for storage of valuable vehicles.

Care while standing

Cars that sit for long periods benefit from attention. Some facilities offer battery conditioning, periodic starting or exercise, tyre pressure checks and fluid inspections. Others simply provide space. Decide which you need, and ask for any services to be recorded.

Covers and positioning

A breathable, well-fitted cover keeps dust off without trapping moisture. Some owners prefer to protect tyres from flat-spotting during long storage. Your specialist or the car's manufacturer may have recommendations for that particular model.

Access and logistics

Consider how quickly you can retrieve the car when you want it, how much notice is needed, and whether the facility can arrange transport to an event or a workshop. A facility that works closely with transporters and specialists can save a great deal of organisation.

Visit before you commit

There is no substitute for seeing a facility in person. Look at how cars are spaced, how clean the building is, and how the staff talk about the cars in their care. The best facilities are run by people who are evidently enthusiasts themselves.

Cost and value

Storage fees vary widely with location, climate control and the level of care included. Cheaper space that is damp or insecure is a false economy. Ask for a clear schedule of charges, including any fees for access, exercise or transport, and compare facilities on what they actually provide rather than on price alone.
