Enclosed car transport, explained

How to move a valuable car without drama.

Classic car in a dark garage

There are times when a collector car needs to travel without being driven: to an auction, a concours, a specialist workshop or a new home abroad. Enclosed transport is the usual answer, and it is worth understanding what good service looks like.

Open or enclosed

Open transporters carry cars exposed to weather and road debris. Enclosed transporters protect the car completely and are generally preferred for valuable, rare or freshly restored cars. Within enclosed transport there are further distinctions: single-car vehicles, shared multi-car loads, and dedicated services where your car travels alone.

Loading matters

Low cars, long overhangs and delicate bodywork need careful loading. Hydraulic tail lifts allow a car to be lifted level rather than driven up a steep ramp. Ask how the operator loads cars like yours, and how they secure them; soft straps around the wheels are generally kinder than fixing points on the body or suspension.

Insurance and liability

Confirm what insurance the transporter carries, what it covers and up to what value. Make sure it is adequate for your car. Ask what happens, and who is responsible, if something goes wrong.

Documentation

Before collection, record the condition of the car thoroughly with dated photographs. A good operator will carry out their own inspection and share it. On delivery, inspect the car again before signing.

Crossing borders

International moves bring customs and paperwork. Within some regions movement is straightforward; beyond them, duties and temporary import arrangements may apply. Experienced transporters can advise, but owners should confirm the requirements with the relevant authorities or a customs specialist.

Timing

Popular events create peaks in demand. If your car needs to reach a major concours or auction, book well in advance and allow some margin either side of the date.

Choosing an operator

Look for experience with cars like yours, clear communication, sensible insurance and recommendations from other owners or specialists you trust. The best transporters are quietly meticulous, and you should hear from them only when there is something worth saying.

Communication during the trip

A good operator keeps you informed without noise: confirmation of collection, an estimated arrival window, and a call if anything changes. Ask how they prefer to communicate and make sure someone is available to receive the car at the destination. Delays happen; silence should not.
